We are pleased to share the recent installation of a new TESCAN VEGA scanning electron microscope, acquired by the Archeometry Group of Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPKE). Within the framework of the professional collaboration between PPKE and the Hungarian National Museum, the instrument has been temporarily installed at the Museum’s laboratory facilities, where the Museum provides the infrastructure required for operation.
The installation process proceeded smoothly, and the system was brought into operational condition within a short time. Already during the initial test measurements, the VEGA demonstrated its stability and reliability as a high-performance analytical tool.
The versatility of the TESCAN VEGA makes it particularly well suited to museum-based and cultural heritage research. The system is ideal for the examination of archaeological finds, ceramics, metals and stone materials, pigments, coatings, and microstructural features. It enables high-resolution analysis of material composition, manufacturing traces, corrosion processes, and the effects of conservation or restoration interventions—while requiring only minimal sample preparation and causing minimal damage.
Following the installation, a detailed system introduction and hands-on demonstration were held, allowing researchers to explore the capabilities of the microscope using real samples. The training covered not only basic operation but also effective measurement strategies and application-specific settings. Based on feedback, the users are now well prepared to operate the system confidently and independently in their daily research work.
This successful installation once again highlights how a carefully selected instrument, supported by professional expertise, can deliver long-term added value. As a result of this collaboration, researchers from both PPKE and the Hungarian National Museum now have access to a modern scanning electron microscopy solution that effectively supports archeometric, materials science, and cultural heritage research.
